Understanding Back Pain
Back pain is the most common reason people seek out help from massage therapists, physical therapists, and chiropractors. According to the NIH, “back pain is widespread in the adult population. Some studies have shown that up to 23% of the world’s adults suffer from chronic low back pain. This population has also shown a one-year recurrence rate of 24% to 80%”. Poor posture, ergonomics, sedentary lifestyles, smoking, and obesity all lead to a higher prevalence of back pain. Work and auto injuries are also common causes of back pain.
Common Types of Back Pain
Do you experience back stiffness and pain? Some of the most common types of back pain are lumbar strain/sprain, disc injury, sciatica, increased thoracic kyphosis, and rib pain. Most of these types of back pain are preventable with a well-rounded exercise routine and ergonomic work station or proper lifting mechanics. Some types of back pain occur due to a car accident, sports injury, or other types of trauma including a work injury.
